WELCOME to Centre For Human Genetics

The Centre for Human Genetics (CHG) is engaged in advanced research, education and specialized training in human genetics and genomics, especially in the context of human disease. The Centre was founded at a time when the first draft sequence of the human genome was about to become publicly available and the importance of this development for biology and medicine was becoming evident. The founding members of the CHG Society included Padma Bhushan Dr. ArcotRamachandran, (formerly Secretary, DST and DG, CSIR and Under Secretary General, United Nations Centre for Human Settlements); Dr. D.M. Nanjundappa(formerlyDeputy Chairman, State Planning Board and VC,Bangalore University), Padma Bhushan Dr. S.Ramachandran, (formerly Secretary, Departmentof Biotechnology, Government of India); PadmaVibhushan Prof. Obaid Siddiqi (formerly Director,National Centre for Biological Sciences) and Dr.R.M. Varma (formerly Director, NIMHANS) and Prof. M. A. Viswamitra, Prof. N. Appaji Rao and Prof. H. Sharat Chandra from the Indian Instituteof Science (appointed Honorary Director of the Centre). The Government of Karnataka enabled the establishment of this institution by including it as a significant component of its Millennium Biotech Policy (2000). Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chair of the State's Vision Group on Biotechnology was a key catalyst in the Centre's founding.

Originally specialized in providing state of the art cytogentic and molecular diagnostic services, today the Centre is involved in providing diagnostic & counselling services for genetic disorders to several patients from all over the state. With generous assistance from the Government of Karnataka, CHG has been providing many of these services free to BPL families.

Besides these services, the scientists at the Centre are engaged in both basic and translational research towards understanding the molecular basis of many human diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, skin disorders, diabetes and cancer. Most of this research is aimed at developing better diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The centre has active working relationships with academic institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Indian Institute of Science etc as well as many hopsitals including Indira Gandhi Institute for Child Health, NIMHANS, St. Johns, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Narayana Hrudayalaya and Mazumdar-Shaw Centre for Cancer, Kidwai Memorial Institute for Oncology, Institute of Nephro-Urology, Bangalore Medical College, Bangalore Diabetes Foundation etc.

This unique blend of expertise at the Centre enables scientists and clinicians to address problems of common interest under a single institutional framework. This is a challenging task in India, because historically medicine and science have grown somewhat independently of each other. It is to be hoped that the new genetics will act as a coalescing force and accelerate the growth of a truly 'biomedical' science of heredity in health and disease. As a first step towards addressing this, CHG is offering training in both basic as well as clinical areas in the form of M.Sc, PhD, post graduate diploma (clinical genetics) as well as short term technical training (in cytogenetics techniques).
